The great lessons from both failure and success.

Many people are in planning mode for 2016. It is going to be a great year, I can feel it – however before we start planning for all the big hairy audacious goals (BHAGs) it is important to take stock of the last year. One of the activities that I have been doing with my clients is to write down both the successes and failures that they have experienced throughout the year.

We look at both success and failure as there so many lessons from both. I recently went to an event called F*ck Up Night. What I loved about it was that rather than the usual panel talking about the path that they took to achieve their success we listened to some successful entrepreneurs who made BIG mistakes. What I took away from that event was that despite being so afraid of making mistakes we can learn so much from them too. During the networking part after the panel, I found a natural openness amongst everyone there to sharing our mistakes with each other, and importantly the lessons learned rather than it being a shameful thing. Which counters so much what our society espouses…success good, failure bad.

When we make mistakes we often look deep into the path that took us there to ensure that we don’t make the same mistake twice. We analyse and dissect what went wrong. This is important and should be done. Einstein once said:

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

At the same time we are often too busy to celebrate our successes. We hit our goals and milestones and then move on to the next with little fanfare. But now is a great time to list them out…you may be surprised by how much you have actually achieved in the last 12 months…and that’s the point.

Once you have written them out you need to celebrate. Especially if you haven’t done so during the year…make a fuss and make it big. One technique I recommend to my clients is to link a reward for achieving a goal in the planning phase however I am sure you will be able to think of something to do to celebrate.

But there is one last thing I would like you to do. Often we leave it there with our successes – identify and celebrate. The one extra step I would like you to do is to look at what steps were taken to achieve that success, as that is something you would like to replicate. Too often we only look at what isn’t working to ensure we don’t do it again. Conversely, you want to understand as best as you can what you did to achieve that success and replicate that.

I promise you that by making the time to do this exercise you will not only gain a sense of achievement of what you accomplished throughout the year, you will start knowing what is working and what isn’t. And now you are ready to plan for a great 2016!
